![]() When I first saw a swastika on an Indian card, I was taken aback: "Why is this offensive Nazi symbol displayed on a wedding invitation?" I knew that the Nazis stole the symbol from the ancient cultures, particularly India. The pain I feel when looking at it is as strong as if I had lived through the war myself. Its sight alone arouses such strong feelings in me that I naturally want to look away. As a Jewish person raised in Europe, I had associated the swastika with the Nazi heritage - extermination of millions of people, destruction of countries and a racist ideology. My great-grandparents were murdered by the Nazis. The swastika is such a ubiquitous symbol of goodness throughout the East that many less-educated Asians are themselves unaware that it could signify any evil. Hindu temples have been vandalized, religious ceremonies displaying swastikas interrupted and devotees accused of neo-Nazism. Many Americans do not know the history or the importance of the symbol to Hindus. In America, like in the rest of the Western world, this most cherished and holy symbol of the East is viewed only as a legacy of the atrocities and murders committed under the black swastika of the Nazis. Asians who immigrate to the West encounter obstacles when trying to incorporate the swastika into their lives. When a symbol represents diametrically opposite concepts to different groups, a natural conflict arises. The swastika is as holy to the Hindus, Jains and Buddhists as it is evil to people from the West. ![]()

![]() The riskier long-term play won out in the end (though many got rich running Polaroid into the ground over and over), and now with a little luck the brand that started it all will continue its success. Chemical Imbalance Theory Flawed Deceitful or Outdated An umbrella review of several research papers on the topic of depression and anti-depressive. It’s been a long, strange trip to watch, but ultimately a satisfying one: Impossible made a bet on the fundamental value of instant film photography, while a series of owners bet on the Polaroid brand name to sell anything they put it on. At $100 it’s not too hard on the wallet, but remember that film is going to run you about $2 per shot. Speaking of which, the Now is not a complete reinvention of the camera by far - it’s a “friendlier” redesign that takes after the popular OneStep but adds improved autofocus, a flash-adjusting light sensor, better battery and a few other nips and tucks. All devices and film will be released under the Polaroid name, though there may be new sub-brands like i-Type and the new Polaroid Now camera. While the quality has increased from the early days of rebranded point-and-shoots, none of the products has ever really caught on, and digital instant printing (Polaroid’s last redoubt) has been eclipsed by a wave of nostalgia for real film, Instax Mini in particular.īut at last the merger dance is complete and Polaroid, Polaroid Originals and The Impossible Project are finally one and the same. Polaroid continued releasing new products in the meantime - presumably projects that were under contract or in development under the brand before its acquisition. They relaunched Impossible as “Polaroid Originals” and released the OneStep 2 camera using a new “i-Type” film process that more closely resembled old Polaroids (while avoiding the expensive cartridge battery). ![]() In 2017, the student became the master as Impossible’s CEO purchased the Polaroid brand name and IP. ![]() Gaga was extremely late to the announcement, but seeing the G元0 prototype was worth it They even hired Lady Gaga as “Creative Director,” but the devices she hyped at CES never really materialized. In time the process matured and Impossible developed new films and distribution partners, growing more successful even as Polaroid continued applying its brand to random, never particularly good photography-adjacent products. So they basically had to reinvent the process from scratch - and the early results were pretty rough.īut they persevered, aided by a passionate community of Polaroid owners, continuously augmented by the film-curious who want something more than a Fujifilm Instax but less than a 35mm SLR. But although the machinery was there, the patents and other IP for the famed Polaroid instant film were not. This time, however, it was getting rid of its film production factories, and a handful of Dutch entrepreneurs and Polaroid experts took over the lease as The Impossible Project. This was unsuccessful, and in 2008 Polaroid was filing for bankruptcy again. Having declined since the ’80s and more or less shuttered in 2001, the company was relaunched as a digital brand and film sales were phased out. ![]() Polaroid at the time was little more than a shell. Cardboard and paper is about one-third of the total in each sector, while food waste is 25 percent in the commercial sector and 17 percent in the residential sector. 8īoth systems also handle a similar waste stream. The largest firm in New York, Action Carting, is fully unionized its New York City refuse collection truck workers are represented by several unions including the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the United Workers of America. In addition to this heavy regulation, unionization is common among the large firms that dominate the market. ![]() City regulations, which were designed to weed out corruption and organized crime, include a maximum of two years for customer contracts, required City approval for changes in ownership, subcontracting of services, and acquisitions, a variety of vehicle and license fees, and the annual submittal of detailed operations information. The big disparity in costs exists despite the fact that the New York City private waste carting industry is heavily regulated. 6 DSNY’s collection costs of $307 per ton also are more than double the estimate for private carters, $133 per ton. Costs are much higher for DSNY than for private carters.ĭSNY’s average combined collection and disposal cost per ton of $431 is more than double that, $185 per ton, of private carters. In 2013, the City earned only $11.50 per ton of paper recycled. In fiscal year 2012 the City received $25 for every ton of paper recycled, lowering the net disposal cost for all waste from $126 to $124 per ton however, this revenue varies with the market for recyclable materials. 5 For certain types of recyclable material, the “disposal” actually yields a profit since the material can be sold rather than DSNY having to pay fees for disposal. On average DSNY spends about $433 per ton for the recyclable and non-recyclable waste it handles, with about $307 for collection and $126 for disposal. ![]() (See Figure 2.)ĭespite the long distances involved in landfill disposal, the cost of disposal for DSNY is less than half that of collection. Of the waste collected by private carters, about 63 percent is recycled. 4 The large volume going to landfills often travels long distances to landfills in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, and South Carolina. Of the 3.8 million tons that DSNY collects annually, about 14 percent is recycled, 76 percent sent to landfills, and 10 percent burned. The collected material is then disposed of in one of three ways-it is recycled (typically with separate recycling methods for paper and for plastic, metal, and glass), transported to and buried in a landfill, or burned at a “waste-to-energy” facility that uses the garbage as fuel to generate electricity. Materials are collected from homes and businesses by large trucks at curbside sites or in dumpsters. Waste management consists of two basic stages-collection and disposal. It costs DSNY about twice as much to collect the trash as to dispose of it. 3 Thus, local spending on residential and commercial garbage is about $2.3 billion annually.(See Figure 1.)Ģ. 2 Private businesses pay an estimated $730 million annually to remove their trash. 1 In fiscal year 2012 DSNY required $1.6 billion of municipal tax dollars to carry out its tasks. DSNY handles about 3.8 million tons of trash annually, or an average of about 10,000 tons daily, and private carters handle about 4.0 million tons annually. The private haulers serve businesses ranging from small pizza parlors to large office buildings. The private system is regulated by the City’s Business Integrity Commission (BIC) and consists of more than 250 waste hauling firms licensed to remove non-construction and non-industrial waste. The public agency is the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) it serves residential buildings, government agencies, and many nonprofit facilities. In New York City trash is handled by two separate systems-one private, one public. New York divides responsibility for handling trash between a public and a private system together they spend $2.3 billion annually. This policy brief presents 12 important facts relating to the high cost of trash removal in New York City.ġ. But this seemingly invisible service is surprisingly expensive, and taxpayers should understand the reasons for its high cost. Collecting and disposing of trash is an essential municipal service, and New Yorkers tend to take it for granted. ![]() ![]() Using beta from locals, hours on Google Earth, and more than a few blog rabbit holes, the route started to fall into place. Sure, it wasn’t a full crossing of the continent in the purest sense, but it was still a lengthy adventure across several borders. Linking them together, our route wound through the lush hills of Uganda and Tanzania, crossed the savannas of Zambia and deserts of Namibia, transected the famed Skeleton Coast, and wrapped up in South Africa. We plotted key stops like Katavi National Park, Lake Tanganyika, Victoria Falls, the Caprivi Strip, the Skeleton Coast, and Namaqua National Park, plus a dozen or so more. We began piecing together the route from halfway across the world. This left 5,000 miles-the equivalent of driving from NYC to LA and back-to figure out. We planned to go off-grid for long stretches, which required tents, stoves, dehydrated meals, first aid, tools, and a repair kit, among other things.īy opting to start in Kampala, we cut a couple thousand miles of sandy riding across the Sahara, allowing ourselves to focus on temperate zones to the south. ![]() Food and gas stops were left unplanned, to preserve a sense of freedom and flexibility. We started by mapping a series of checkpoints- national parks, lakes, deserts, waterfalls, and lodges for semi-regular showers-and connected these dots from north to south. ![]() Photo by Andy Cochraneīuilding an Africa road trip route from the ground up So, we unanimously chose the alternative, a shorter route that allowed us to go further off the beaten path. Even with the right bikes, 7,500 miles in 25 days (after excluding a few for flights and a buffer for mechanical mishaps) didn’t pencil. Napkin math showed it wasn’t possible to ride from the Med to the southern tip without an abundance of long, boring highway miles. The first step was securing a month of PTO, and the second was figuring out how in the world we were going to tick Sean’s bucket list. We knew early on that we needed to start from scratch we weren’t keen on a copy/pasted trip report. It’s a potent emotion, and once you get a hit of it, it’s hard to quit. This kind of adventure tends to invoke a feeling of being raw, small, and very alive all at the same time. This wasn’t a matter of practicality as much as it was knowing what makes us happy: driving down a dirt road, semi-lost in a foreign land. The second most popular trans-continental route follows the western coast and ends in Morocco. It stays mostly on tarmac, paralleling the southern coast to Durban, then north through Mozambique and Malai, before heading to Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa, followed by a final push to Cairo. While there's no set moto route across Africa akin to the Pan-American Highway in our hemisphere, there is a well documented thoroughfare from Cape Town to Cairo. After years living in Uganda, exploring rural roads on a beater four-stroke, he chirped, “I’ve dreamt of riding across Africa for a decade.”Ī handful of months later, relying on some mystery cocktail of hustle, luck, and collective penchant for mischief, we set out to do just that. His answer was as immediate as it was simple. I asked Sean about his dream trip, thinking little of it. The entire week was a comedy of errors-dead batteries, broken belts, blown tubes-which set the scene for a big idea. Our co-conspirators, Marlin and Josh, were busy hooking up a tow rope in hopes of limping a bike back to Bishop. We were testing new electric motos and things weren’t exactly going to plan. Six months before I embarked, I sat on the side of a dirt road in the southern Sierra with my friend Sean, riffing on how to get out of our current pickle. Such is the genesis story of my motorcycle ride across a large swath of African soil, measuring out 5,000 miles from Uganda to South Africa. ![]() Or perhaps better said, the best ideas often come at the hardest times.
